It's been such a long time since I've written anything with more than 160/140 characters,such is the allure of Plurk/Twitter, that it has made me lazy to string more than 2 sentences together, let alone paragraphs.

Perhaps I'm done sharing the more intimate details of what's going on in my head, taking the easy route of bombarding you with the most frivolous of updates online.

Every post is about the most mundane of things; where I am (Foursquare), what I'm doing (Twitter), why things are the way they are (Plurk). Yet, it takes up a good part of my day. God forbid if I should ever (never!) jump on the Farcebook wagon.

Have I lost sight of actual "Life"? I can't recall not going through a day without my trigger happy thumb (alpha-numeric keypad for me) ready to fire away on my mobile device.

Time overseas is spent, ironically, online about the going ons back home, where I have my online presence.

It has come to a point where I've tried to impose a curfew on my time online.

Looking at the time of posting this though, you'd know that once again, I've failed.

Well, I did manage more than 2 sentences, didn't I?

Another half of the year has begun.

Right up till the first half I was pretty optimistic. Plans were afoot, albeit in my head only.

Those were cut down to size recently, and I felt defeated. My cowardice almost cost me the one thing that is good in my life at the moment.

自从认识了Twitter和Plurk之后，就很少回来这里。

每次留言在Twitter或Plurk都是那百多个字，以最短的时间，希望能传达最多种情绪。

无意间将自己在这里的一片小空间忽略了。但每次提笔，都心不在焉，往往就干脆不写了。

今晚，游览了一些朋友的小天空之后，忽然感到惭愧。我以前那分热诚去了哪儿？是我生活中少了那少许的纪律，还是生命中有了更重要的核心？

或者是懂得节制自己，凡事都经大脑过滤几次才肯纪录下来？

How far would you take your complaint when dealt a bad hand at a restaurant that has grown from mom&pop stall to a tourist attraction that charges a premium for their menu.

Good friend of mine took it all the way to print and online media, even posting onto Boo&Bouquet which has made itself into the news recently.

"Ms Lee Ying Wen would think twice about eating out at No Signboard Restaurant in Vivocity again after her experience with her "missing credit card" last Saturday. Here's her story: link.."

Somehow the above website has been closely watched by some retailers/restaurateurs and they responded quite promptly.

"Ms Lee Ying Wen, who wrote to me yesterday about her "missing credit card" experience at No Signboard Restaurant in Vivocity on Saturday, received a reply from the management today -- a day after her story appeared in this blog. link..."

I feel though, that the response was kinda knee jerk and in some way, condescending. Last I know, my friend is still trying to give away the vouchers they sent her.

" So someone sent a big complaint letter. Let's gloss over everything with some cash vouchers. Singaporeans can't resist a freebie. It'll be so un-Singaporean to do it."

Don't take it lying down, nor let sleeping dogs lie.

Word to your Mother (tongue)

So now the gahment is considering letting kids who cannot manage a pass in their mother tongue to slide into (top) secondary schools without it.

Over the years the MOE has tweaked the education system in so many ways that students and parents sometimes don't recognize the syllabus by the time term starts anymore. This latest "consideration" though, takes the cake.

While I was not a bright student back in the days, I am glad that I went to a school with deep roots in Chinese culture. I took up Confucius studies, studied Chinese literature. Both of which I sucked big time. It did, though, expose me to a world where a few words put together, can summarize a whole passage.

Fast forward to present day. The Chinese language is being taken up in many parts of the world. It is not uncommon in my job to hear Caucasians, Japanese, Indians etc speak the language with some fluency. That they have recognized the economical benefit of grasping the language speaks volumes.

If people of non-Chinese decent are playing catch up to master Mandarin, how come our schools here are being made to dumb it down many levels? And if the "consideration" is taken up, why would anyone in school bother to learn the language since it holds little or no stake in the final assessment before they go onto secondary schools?

It just reflects the way society has placed emphasis on short term, often impatient, quick fixes.

I am also leaning towards the theory that somewhere on this island there are little white ponies who's influencing the decision making.

Do note that of course I am not referring only to the Chinese language, but our ethnic mother tongue at that. Malays should be able to master Bahasa Melayu, Indians -Tamil. Language is the link we have with our parents, and the older generation, of whom has many tales to share, recipes to life.

I have been posting more randomly via Twitter and Plurk, thanks in large parts to my smart phone. Many nowadays just can't, or won't, sift through anything more than 140 characters.

Sign of the times.

We want to know things in an instant, with the least amount of fuss. When was the last time you sat down and had a conversation with someone without reference to a tweet, a post on your facebook wall, and in my case, a plurk?

True that I have been communicating with many of you with the written word for the longest time. However, nothing beats sitting down over a nice hot kopi; seeing, hearing, giving each other a firm handshake or a warm hug.

All this, whilst resisting the urge to check in on your online accounts via the mobile web.

The weekend is coming up.

Go out and talk to someone.

I was in danger of turning into my Mum.

Hoarding items from days of yore; the movie ticket from the 1st date, boxes from gadgets bought over the years, old uniforms, dust collecting on electronics sitting in a sad corner at home, clothes bought on a whim. And tupperware... a lot of tupperware.

It started out with a cabin bag that was excess to requirement. Then the 7.1 speaker system that wasn't making a squeak to the home theatre experience. Then the 5.1 DVD system which was a leftover for when my brother was staying with me. Good stuff, all of 'em, but bad use of space.

So word was sent out that the Haus of Tiong was de-cluttering. Of course, one has to entice them people to show. Enter Wii, steamboat and Mahjong. How they love their mahjong... The trio combo were so successful that some forgot about picking up things for a good part of the day.

However, some did go back with items that will get a new lease of life instead of sitting in a dark corner gathering sinus-inducing dust. Somewhere, someone out there is blasting their ears off with a newly acquired sound system, a room will be cooled down considerably by a large fan, stacks of CDs are being digitized into a huge archive, and hopefully someone will turn up with a better tan next time.

And at Lor Ah Soo? I can see my kitchen. Again.

So it was to be Kevin's birthday on the 2nd Jan of 2010. With this crew there usually is a theme for their birthdays, but I think this really takes the cake. I assured them that the crowd will literally part for them even though it would be a full house by time they got to Wala after the birthday dinner.

It occurred to me to head towards Mustaffa Centre. This place really has everything. It didn't take me long to locate the souvenir department and begin to find a size that will fit me. Luckily the costume is situated at a tiny corner so I could try it on right there, without shoppers thinking I had a particular fetish. Proceeded to make payment before whizzing off.

Word must've got out to the Barflies, cuz by the time we got to Wala the turnout was big. The same people had rushed from a party from another end of the island to join those who, as usual, were there early for a table.

For the first Sa-Thirst-day in 2010 at Wala, it definitely is memorable!!

P.S. another theme party on the same night got totally pwned by ours!

So I was given 2 complimentary tickets to watch our National Lions play against Thailand for the AFC Asia Cup qualifier.

With nothing to do till my regular jaunt to Wala Wala (we call it SaThirstDay now..) , I asked my new friend James to join me. Great chance for him to soak in some local action too.

We had a quick lunch opposite the Geylang Lorong 1 bus terminal. The mutton briyani at Banana Leaf is pretty decent.

Whilst washing down the food with a cup of teh tarik, James asked about the price of the ticket.

Then it hit me.

I had stuff everything plus the kitchen sink into my bermuda pockets, except for the tickets!!

Feeling rather stupid, we made our way there on foot with the rest of the supporters to the stadium. The drinks and food temporary stalls were doing brisk business. James took some photos whilst I took everything in with my Vado HD.

The National Stadium is slated to be torn down. When? Nobody knows, cuz they been pushing back the demolition date too many times. Looking at it, I do not think it is necessary to be reduced to rubble.

All they really need to do is put in proper seating instead of the benches, add 2 jumbo screens and a roof. And voila! I suspect it would cost less than tearing it down and building a new one all over again.

Now you probably asking, what about the match?

It ended 1-3. The Thais didn't play that well, but Singapore sucked even more.

The only upside was that we didn't have to watch the match in the rain.

And I was soooo looking forward to using my 100yen rain jacket...

There's only one way to celebrate your birthday... BarFly Style!!

Now that you are 21, there are a few things you should take note of;

1. Flashing the 'V' sign while taking photos is not cute anymore hokaay?!

2. If you wanna talk to a girl, just walk up to her and do so. Don't send a whole section of boys to do it for you, and pretend that you just want to take a photo.

3. Filling your stomach before a night of heavy drinking; Good idea. Ordering dory fish with heavy cream sauce; Bad idea.

4. The sing title is "Don't Stop Me Now", not "Having A Good Time".

5. Don't keep dissin' the CowboyBar/BarFlies, you will kena your just deserts many many times over one.

All in all, you performed admirably. And had the good sense to merlion very, very far away.

Mercy, Mercy me

Sometimes it takes just a picture, a few line in the papers to get people moving.

Now, I am not talking about Ris Low, or Tracy Ang. Those are fodder for idle time.

It was the typhoon that is sweeping across parts of SE Asia that did it for me. Pictures of helpless folks stranded by the floods, children who have lost their homes, families still trying to beef up their rickety abode against mother nature...

I went over to Mercy Relief Singapore's and read about their efforts there.

If you look at either side of this post you will see pictures and video of my party at Wala Wala. Suffice to say I thoroughly enjoyed myself, more so because I managed to stay upright till the end of the night.

On an earlier date with some friends, after a nice home cooked meal, they popped out a cake for me. I almost singed my eyebrows trying to blow out all the candles...

Next time 1 candle can liao, okay?

My better half had planned thursday night around a "Rockstar" theme and gave out KISS masks that she lovingly made by hand. We had fun walking around in it and taking many many photos. The Gene Simmons one was the crowd favourite, no surprise there.

Gone paperless

2 years ago I was all gungho about being involved in club activities. It was refreshing, challenging, and gave me a sense of belonging. The energy within the committee was electric. Though not smooth all the time, the clubs are managed well enough.

As with most of what I do though, I got bored. The meetings, the logistics, the paperwork. Oh the paperwork!! I have taken on more than I can chew. Productivity on my part came to a halt. It was not doing both clubs any good for me to stay on.

And so I stepped down. It is a win-win. I can continue to like what the clubs are doing for members, and still maintain a casual, civil relationship with the exco.

I shall stick to organizing random ctivities on the fly with the motley crew I hang with. More fun in that.

And look, no paperwork!!

After the last outing to Drama Centre, I was really hoping that the night out to Esplanade turns out much better.

And it did indeed.

I remember I was in a cab when some Mandarin radio station deejay was interviewing one of the cast members, Emma Yong, who did her Chinese best in that interview, haltingly. My ears perked up when I heard that Singapore's queen of drag, Kumar and my boyhood Asia Bagus host, Najip Ali, are part of the ensemble in this production!

Helmed by Selena Tan of Dim Sum Dollies fame, $ingDollar promised much right from the 1st night it opened. One only has to have a feel of the programme for this musical to see that it is ~~bank-rolled~~ a well sponsored one, even if it doesn't make much ticket sales, which I highly doubt.

$ingDollar does well to engage the audience; with a familar setting (Geylang) , the standard stereotypes (most Bhangladeshis are muslims and CAN eat beef, as explained by Kumar's character as, what else, the foreign labourer) , and scores of ditties that poke fun at anything and everything local-centric. All this was played out with an actual live band behind, and the sets look great.

I especially enjoyed the Micheal Jackson 'tribute' which they worked in, with men who were until recently held in high regard but landed in deep shite taking their turns doing their MJ thang. Heck they even managed to work a disgraced monk into the number!

Brilliant.

The trio of Selena, Emma and Pam are good, dimsumdollying their way around. Kumar was the funny one, ad-libbing his way through at some parts. Najip Ali is the better dancer, Hossan Leong the better singer. Lim Kay Siu is the veteren, whilst Sebastian Tan... well let's just say I am not streching my neck out for his Broadway Beng production coming soon.

The musical is the a great sum of all the above talents, and worth wearing something smarter than bermudas and flip flops for.

4/5 stars!

P.S. What's with the local audience being so stingy with a standing ovation, har?!

Shooting Blanks

It has been a while since I watched any theatre/play/musical. So I was hyped up about watching "Own Time Own Target", a play centering around National Service.

I didn't understand though, how it had to be 2 hours or more for something that has National Service as a backdrop. It's been done before and seriously, there are only those few jokes you can tell about NS before it gets old.

The play made up of 2 halves, each with its own storyline (hence, Own Time Own Target?).

Part 1 was ok, with the actors taking a stab at a recent security lapse that happened locally. It did illicit some snide guffaws from me, but that was it.

Part 2 began promisingly, with the familiar backdrop of the 1st fourteen days in BMT. I could identify with the charactors portrayed, especially the Seargent (NOT the one whose only line was "CHEEEEEEBYE") who reminded me of my own whilst on Tekong.

Smiling Tiger we used to call him...

Part 2 was excruciatingly long, and too pink even for a neutral like me. By the umpteenth ditty the performers put on I was looking at my watch, wondering when all the farce was gonna end.

And how I bolted outta that exit door.

P.S. The night did end nicely, with us cheonging all the way down to Wala Wala for the last set. Now THAT is a show!!

Better late than never...

It been a while since I met the motley crew for a nice meal.

It was through a casual conversation on plurk, coupled with the fact that I could not get a decent meal without burning a hole in my pocket whilst in Zurich, that I suddenly had a craving for curry fish head.

More plurking here and there, and after some googling, we settled for Ocean Curry Fish Head at Toa Payoh Lorong 8. I actually saved my tummy the whole day for this!

The thing to note about the group, some of us are fashionably late.

6pm became 7pm, meaning we settled down by 8pm. Those that got there early had ordered ahead-thankew JF and Aloe, so by the time we plonked ourselves down the table started filling up with plate after plate of delectable dishes.

Won't go into a detailed review but suffice to say all were well satisfied. The mouth didn't stop moving; we were either wolfing down the food or engaging in light-hearted banter. Not bad for $10/head.

We walked off the heavy meal...to another food area. Durians were bought this time to go with more refreshments. An eager drink stall lady had to come back to us twice for orders. Some of us had the bright idea to wash the durians down with beer. Mistake.

The gang dispersed slowly from 10pm onwards. All that food made me dizzy, and I dozed off on bed promptly.

Sunday rounded off nicely.

This was the day that 10 Arsenal fans went to Novena, Velocity to have their heads shaved in support of Childrens Cancer Foundation, on their annual Hair for Hope event.

Arsenal's season might be over, but here at Arsenal Singapore we still plan for activities for our fanclub. There will definately be a kickabout to keep them feet busy amongst members. Since I am not so good on my feet, I am concentrating on contributing to the community...

The first time I came to know about Hair for Hope was when friends of mine signed up as a volunteer shavee, and since I can't shave mine due to my line of work, I pledged against their names. I got in touch with the foundation recently, on behalf of Arsenal Singapore, and now am proud to say that we are working with Children's Cancer Foundation on their Hair for Hope 2009 project.

Creating awareness amongst a football fanclub is not easy, with many just content with watching the football being played on the big screen. With email blasts to members, and a stack of flyers, bit by bit I am hoping to reach out to more. Members are being roped in to volunteers to shave their hair in support of children who lose theirs while receiving treatment.

The event will be held at Novena Square on 05July, and Arsenal Singapore will be making their presence felt.If you wish to make a contribution, please go to here to pledge any amount through our members, it's all going to a good cause.

After Shirlyn jet off to LA to pursue her passion in yoga, my Mummy dearest celebrated her 70th birthday with a dinner that had a huge turnout. She has worked hard all her life, and deserved the bash 101%!

Play

Plenty of it. Movies, Wii gathering, a great dinner party with good friends, capped off with a vacation in Boracay. Woots!

Arsenal

They are not a convincing force this season, though they do have their moments. That we were not in contention for the top spot was glaringly apparent. To not grab the FA cup was a disappointment. To reach the semi-finals, only to concuss over 2 legs, was both a high, and a frustrating low. As a fan, I can only keep the faith and see a newer, tougher team emerge next season.

Yes. Her fees have been paid. Yes. Airfare has been taken care of. There's the little detail of expenses though.. And this is where I suspect many of her friends have came in to assist.

Another trip to The Emirates.

One of the perks of the job is that I get to watch The Arsenal 'Live' in action at their home ground.

Luck would have it that the match was going on general sale while I am in London. After a few keystrokes I had booked myself a seat at The Emirates Stadium for the showdown between Arsenal and Burnley.

The Sunday started out well enough. I took a

short tube ride to Holloway Road station on a crisp morning. The Arsenal scarf wrapped snugly around my neck, I was ready for an afternoon of FA Cup action.

The stadium was but a short walk away and I quicken my pace, eager to get hold of the ticket to the match. Alas, I was early there. So across the Armoury I went for a quick breakfast of beef fried rice and milk tea. For 4 quid it is good value.

The atmosphere at the stadium was festive, the small group of away fans of Burnley FC made their presence felt. It's nice to see the fans turn up to support their local team, no matter their rankings in the league.

After receiving my booked ticket from the reservation booth, it was a bit of window shopping at the Armoury. The new spring/summer collection of Arsenal merchandise just came out and people were in long lines snapping them up. I had to bite my tongue, held on to my credit cards and came out of the store unscathed.

Anyways the journey was the watch The Arsenal in action. Climbing the few steps up to my seat, I was looking forward to seeing The Red Army in action.

The view was magnificant, it was like watching the match on a gazillion-inch TV. Lest I do a bad job at commentating about the match, here's a link to it.

All in all, I am impressed with Bacary Sanga's workrate, Kieren Gibbs' defending, and even Emannuel Eboue, who seem like a new player! The goals scored were so...Arsenal. Alexander Song, though not a Fabregas did put in both assist that led to Edu and Eboue's goals. I caught flashes of our new Russian Andrey Arshavin's brilliance too.

As Siren says,"Even Eboue scored!".

The temperature after the match dropped a few more degrees, but I was feeling all warm inside. Arsenal are slowly getting back on track, one match at a time.

So I was surprised that not many young people know that last night, 正月十五, was also a night for lovers.

At least not those at Wala Wala last night...

Someone handed in a song dedication for the band, and wished one and all a happy Chinese Valentines'. The whole band, all Chinese by the way, looked puzzled and began to ask each other about it.

I nodded and told my group that yes, it's true. Again, I got blank stares from the early 20-ers...

"It used to be that the single ladies do not get to go out too often. 正月十五，元宵节， was one of the few dates that they could all gather and watch lanterns being lit, one of the traditions from way back then. So I had a taste of 卫生麻将-MahJong after a long time when, after the reunion dinner, I asked if my teenage niece plays. Soon we were sitting down playing a healthy, short session.

When I got home I had this itch that just wouldn't go away. Started plurking about it. If not for the last minute logistics plus the midnight charge, we would've had a game right at my place the same night/morning. We settled for one round of WahJong on Viwawa instead...

A game was finally organised last night, I was impressed at how we made the decision at such short notice. I had to lug a Mahjong table from my brother's place, along with the set. Then the splitting of the chips (I would've preferrred to play with actual cash la). After which it was a matter of waiting for the kars to arrive...

All came with significant other in tow, but the Wii made sure they were not left gawking over our shoulders. Nick Lee came with refereshments, and Cow went to buy MacDonalds for the peckish gamblers. Thiang this time had a chance to improve on her MarioKart, sans alcohol punishment. Credit to 嘻哈赌妹 1121 for keeping the spirits up throughout the night till first light in the morning.

Perhaps it had to do with the fact that I haven't touched a set of tiles for so long, I was wide awake for the whole sesion. The clickity-clacking, the friendly banter, the mindphucking amongst 4 players, the cursing at an inanimate object. It all came back to me...Funny how I used to struggle through even 2 rounds, and once dozed off while picking up a tile.

It could be that I no longer am the 放炮菜头!

今年很幸运，可以和一家在新加坡迎接牛年的来临。

往年，自己的屋子新年的布置摆设都是让母亲大人一手包办。可是往往都让我看了目不暇给。。。太多，太卡通了！

牛年，也是我的年，所以去上海时买了一大堆新年的点缀品，来让我的小屋添上一点春节的色彩。其实在那买也不算便宜到那儿去，但反正人已经到了，就买了一整篮，　花了近八十新币！！

回来之后，不知从那开始。幸亏朋友在家，帮了我一大忙，给我建议。看上去，还算不错吧。。。

当然，把家布置起来，就为了和好朋友们聚在一起。有了 Wii 之后，就更容易在一起闹翻天了！！

小弟在此祝大家。。。

The last 2 weeks have been a blur of waving wiimotes, screaming CB Sishtas, and plenty of whiskey. The festive seasons are following closer than previous years too, therefore the non-stop celebrations.

It began innocently enough; I have a new Wii and plenty of alcohol. You bring food, come over and we play.

What surprised me was how popular my Wii parties became. The good people from The CowBoyBar are always asking about the next Wii party when they leave. Tactics of the games we play are discussed while online. Mystical creatures such as Merlions and LongKang Fairies start to appear. Couples start rabba-ing on the floor. My address have taken on different monikers.

I as a host didn't have to do much, other than the shifting of some furniture. The party practically runs by itself, as long as the alcohol is flowing. Wii and alcohol is a very potent mix, trust me.

Luckily my neighbour either sleep very soundly, or are very patient with the racket that we create at night.

Just in case anyways, will be preparing a CNY hamper for them.

They say behind every man is a woman.

I'm the lucky bastard with 2.

My dear Sister, who's always giving me advice and actually being the saner of us 2. And my hard working Mum.

We have moved apart since 5-6 years ago. The thing about staying together as a family is one doesn't appreciate them much. We are more than happy to see each other on our time off from work, when even having a smoke break and bitching about customers counts as quality time.

My Sis remembers details that are very often sketchy in my head. Like how I used to coach her after my kindergarten classes, so that she has a head start when she starts. Or how I made condensed milk on bread when no one is at home (this one I totally do not recall...). All this she put down in an interview with a local free magazine.

I do remember cleaning the duapehkong altar with her, my Mum's idea of playtime (very clever, she). This was whilst my elder brothers, all 4 of them, were out selling otah-otah/kueh kuehs, playing football/brawl, and honing their mahjong skills. I was deemed too young to join them, but old enough to take care of 小妹.

Mum always had a plan.

She's taking life easy now, my Mum. It was difficult for us to make her stay home, rather than go try her hand out at running another hawker stall. She always says she wouldn't know what to do with so much free time. We always said don't slave yourself over a tiny income, when our allowances can provide for her.

Now we can't keep her from participating in every activity that the local senior club organizes. Karaoke seems to be on the top of her list, though I've asked her to try those that are more active, like dancing. They do take sort trips away from home, and she just loves to take photos. Still has some trouble adapting to the digital camera we bought her some time back, but she keeps clicking away nonetheless.

Recently she sprained her foot whilst getting onto a bus. Poor lady continued the trip home on the same bus with no assistance from other commuters (bastards!). She only called me when she realized that she couldn't put her weight on it the next day.

After several hours at a local hospital, and 3 X-rays, it was determined that she did not have any broken bones. Plenty of rest is required, and a walker. She passed up on the walker, instead opting to purchase the x-rays for reasons unknown to both of us.

End of the day, she still seem apologetic about being unable to help out at my coming Wii party!

So it be Christmas soon.

I just came back from my buddy's place and was roped in to dress up the family's Christmas Tree.

After some half an hour, we put together a decent enough looking tree to rival those $3000-odd ones at the shopping mall.

Not being Christian, I never fully grasped the real meaning of Christmas. The biblical origin is easy enough to look up. It's the way it is celebrated that I am having trouble consolidating.

Is it another expensive excuse to party the night away? In some neighbourhoods, it has become a showcase of one-upmanship amongst residents. Maybe it has to do with the shopping. Or the hope of receiving a nice gift.

The season of giving, they call it.

I used to work at a retail store. I once had some office gals asking me to gift wrap toothpaste for the office party, in which all had to play secret santa and buy a gift for another colleague. Toothpaste, all 4 tubes of it, bundled in a themed gift wrapping paper. If she was gonna give a gag gift, she could've done better with some packs of condoms.

She might have thought that the toothpaste was cheaper. I decided that the toothpaste was worth more than her...

So it is that I have been scheduled to fly off to Hong Kong on Christmas eve. Hence a few gatherings with different group of friends have been planned at my humble abode. No fancy tree, no "Secret Santa", no Christmas ham, no carols.

Just a shite-load of alcohol, some local finger food, and the Wii...

Baa-humbug...!

Set my alarm for 3.30am to watch a "Live" Champions League match.

Only got up at 20mins before end of the match.

Still I turned on the computer and click on my favourite "watch-football-for-free-so-don't-have-to-pay-those-bloodsuckas" channel.

A quick and sublime free kick on the 86th minute by newly (deservedly too?) appointed Captain Cesc Fabregas up the field picked out an advancing Nicklas Bendtnar to score the only goal that takes Arsenal to the top of Group G.

I didn't see how the match was 75minutes before this, but am damn glad I still climbed outta bed to watch 15 minutes of football...

1-nil to the Arsenal!!

Been I while since I flew to Paris, so it was a pleasant change from my usual schedule.

Taking a long walk from Arc de Triomphe to the boardwalk of Champs Elysees in the crisp chilly air was nice. Unfortunately my batteries in the camera died on me, even the one in my mobile phone, so photos are limited at the moment.

Had a nice meal of mussels in a pot, and even learnt a new handy way to enjoy the meal, without the cutlery. The conversation flowed, peppered with a lot of general knowledge from the seniors. Lunch was a long one, naturally, but it felt like a breeze.

We parted company after a nice cuppa. I continued my trek along Champ Elysees, marveling at the manicured trees along the boulevard. The leaves have turned golden brown, and stalls were being built for the coming Christmas.

Made a few turns before arriving at the Eiffel Tower, a giant behemoth of steel amidst the concrete monuments that dot the city. It goes that night shots of the Tower are no longer allowed, if you make a profit from the sale of the image. Had a cancer stick at the park bench before making my way to the nearest Metro station. Turned back to have a lingering look at it before disappearing underground.

Paris definitely cannot be covered in a short stay. For now though, this will have to do.

Spent an evening with the nice people from CBB.

The prawn fishing was fun to watch, although from what I read on their plurks they all cannot out-fish the uncles across them. Practise makes perfect, I say. Vandalin, who was strumming some tunes when I got there, brought a nice bottle of Muscat wine which went quite well with the grilled prawns

Next time must bring martell and sliced ginger to steam the prawns...

Then it was off to AMK for a proper dinner. We helped ourselves in opening up our own tables near stacks of beer crates. I must say I did a good job of clearing the dirty dishes left behind--occupational hazard. Such a big S11 with so few cleaners, they must be tired and hassled the whole night.

The air was so warm that I had to pop into a nearby 7-11 in the midst of dinner just to cool down.

After a satisfying meal we decided to go to the AMK Hub to enjoy free air-conditioning. I wondered aloud if residents at AMK don't like to watch weekend TV, cuz the area was teeming with people!

So what did a group with a combined age of 200+ do? We went to the arcade. Mind you, this is not a place where they have LAN games and all that. It's back to Daytona Racing, Time Crisis, Basketball Hoops, and the groups favourite, Bishi Bashii.

Cow already had a pre-paid card with him, so he kindly tapped in for many of the games we played. 大坏人 also went to get himself one, and attempted to set a new record for fastest fingering (his own words). The accolade of Arcade Lian went to this young lady codenamed 1121. She could do it with both eyes closed, if she chose to, really...

It got pretty late, and the loud ringing and flashing lights were getting to some of us. We went on our separate ways, and hope that there'll be another eating/drinking/gaming session soon...

Nobody gave us a chance. Even a fan in the entertainment line was not too kind when talking about us.

The papers? Well, they would do anything to sell a few extra copies, by appealing to the lowest common denominator. So called "local football analyst" spouting ~~bullshite~~ nonsense in the afternoon paper, while the rest gave a more even tempered view.

Interestingly, a friend observed that there were less followers in their club colours than ours. Guess it goes a long way in distinguishing between the pride of a staunch faithful and one who chose to go with the blinking masses.

All huddled in our home ground, with wings flying and beer flowing, we chanted the club's tune over and over and over again. Every move met with either gasps or cheers, every decision met with derision from us.

In the end, we came out tops and laughing. Many did not want to leave, hoping the 90-odd minutes will be replayed over and over again.

This was a night for the faithful, for the believers, for the Gooners...

I've owned gaming consoles and portables before.

I remembered when I first set my eye on the Playstation(1st Gen). It was such a gleaming new toy that I didn't stop playing it for hours on end, most times into the early mornings right before work. I learnt the rules of American Football on it, understood the scoring system of Baseball with it, got interested in Golf because of it.

Then they had to come up with newer and faster machines. And games that confounded the tiny, lateral brain of mine. Final Fantasy was a series of games that I never mastered. I think strategies and plots are not my forte. I suck even worse at driving games, which reinforces the wise decision not to learn to drive, evar!

The gaming bug bit me again not long later, when I got my hands on a PSP. Great. Here's one I can carry along for work, and it saves my music and photos too! No need to zhng at all, I already have difficulty getting to the last level of the racing game that came with it, let alone play more the 3 games at any one time.

I left it alone for a while, passing it to friends who cleared all the levels and won new characters in the games for me. They win liao lo...

A gameboy micro I gave away as a present a while back found its way back to me, and I am having trouble bringing Mario back home everytime!

I fawned over the PS3...not only for it's gaming functions, but it's aillity to play blu-ray; the champagne of entertainment these days. Still, I thought it required a lotta solitary patience when it came to conquering the games that they put out.

And so, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you...

担起新任快一个月了。每次打上新的领带，就像十三年前第一天上班一样。

开心。紧张。自豪。

虽然近年来有尝试带领几名属下，但真正的以上司的身份把工作顺利完成，对我来说还是一个新的体验。

要学的东西多，需要教导的东西更多。

常常要思索一番，如何以最适当的方法，最恰当的态度，来对待新一代的同事。

我想，一切由一个 “静” 字开始。

It's ~~quite~~ very permanent, and I'm sure many eyebrows will be raised if and when I get it done. I hear that it can get addictive too.

So there I was, stumped at how I'm gonna capture the attention of the small but important audience in the room.

The presentation slide was staring back at me, the words daring me to repeat them back to the floor. The fonts challenging me to a battle for the attention of the audience. It was threatening to turn into a borefest.

A friend sits me down to tell me as much during the rehearsal. I had 30 minutes before the real thing starts. It was counting down to the last 15 when it struck me.

Tell a story. One that I know well, where I know the characters inside out. One that would engage them, and tickle their funny bones at times. One that would inspire them, lift them out from the mundane dribble that was 10 minutes worth of slides before me.

I told them the story of Arsenal Football Club.

Fitting it into my presentation got much easier as the minutes went by. I was not reading from an index card, I didn't have to regurgitate boring facts. My audience were not dozing off.

Best of all. I was enjoying myself. At the end of my presentation, I got approving nods from my important guests, and rousing applause from my classmates.

Thank you Arsenal FC. You saved my ass.

We were cracking jokes about each others' naive/stupid questions in class.

She didn't like the way I gave her the "Duh!" look.

Then in front of the others, plus some juniors within earshot, she subjects me to her vitriol.

I was taken aback.

Not that I was being shouted at.

But how would I look in front of those Juniors?

Now I am frustrated.

Yesterday was when my birthday celebration really took off.

I had my trepidations, not knowing how drunk I will get. The nice people from CowBoyBar were ready to unleash up to 3 "waterfalls" on me. The others from Arsenal Singapore and Batam Cable Ski were not gonna let me off lightly either.

Or so I thought.

The evening got off well enough, I started off with a Kilkenny to calm the butterflies in my rotund tummy. Ed was first to arrive and I promptly got him to chope the next table. Allen was next, so he sat at the table next to mine. Good, 3 tables of merrymakers.

The rest of the gang streamed in before the first set kicked off, with most of them escaping the downpour outside. The 1st of 2 bottles of whisky was ordered and I stuck with that for the rest of the night. Then I was roving around the 3 tables like a 小姐 at Kabuki KTV, sans tips...

"先生贵姓？第一次来吗？我是24号，您叫我小辣椒就行了！嘻嘻。。。"

Of course, ~~certain~~ ~~most~~ all parts of the night is a blur now. But overall, I didn't make too much of a fool of myself, or embarrass my friends too much. I do recall standing on the stool when my Sis mentioned me on stage though...details are sketchy at the moment, but I'm sure my friends will be filling me in.

From what my friends tell me, I was quite steady for the most part of the evening. At one point, when my dear Sis was singing her band's version of I will survive, I stayed in the wash room till she got over the verse where she mentions something about her brother when he was 3. Other than that, I think I was pretty steady throughout the night.

I abhor the dearth of birthday cakes when people celebrate at Wala Wala, so I was beaming when I came back to find a very nice one with a candle waiting for me. Someone told me that I was skilful slicing up the cake after the birthday song. That's cuz I was still sober while cutting it, I told her.

So all in all, I came out at the end of the night pretty unscathed. I was not reduced to a longkang fairy, I didn't start any fights, or go around hugging strangers. The gifts I received were wonderful, and my Sis didn't have to tsk tsk at me throughout.

I only just scrapped my knee at the end of the night. Even that I only have sketchy details. Think it involves me dashing across the road...

I’ve known Jeff aka ‘Ah Tiong’ for about more than two years through the Arsenal Singapore Supporters Club. This club is amazing and I’ve amassed some good friends there. Jeff is one of them. Naturally, we became closer and of course with alcohol involved. Who would not like him, he is such ‘nice’ guy… Through him, I got to know his sister, Shirlyn. She ‘rocks’ my world. Hmmmm….

One of the highlights I would like to share is the Bangkok trip with Jeff in Apr 2008. It was fun and I had a different perspective of how Jeff is. Sometimes, you never thought what and who your friends are until you go for an oversea trip with them. You’ll definitely learn something from each other. And no, we didn’t have bang cock sessions there. We were there to attend a wedding. During the trip, I found out he likes to take long walk and public transport rather than taking the taxis (even though it is damn near and the cab ride was crazily cheap). In the end, I followed his propensity and I had a wonderful insight of Bangkok, which I have never experienced (I was there in 1996). In the end, I enjoyed the walking and the train rides, feeling so touristy and everything. What an experience!

Jeff is really a great way to fly. He is a mixed of a ‘Hokkien peng’ and a down to earth person. I can only describe him as ‘what you see is what you get’. He has no qualms about expressing what’s in his mind and heart. Though sometimes he may be misunderstood by people, he has no malice intended. He is also one charming man and he takes action smoothly. I do not know how he operates though, but I envy him in some way or another. But above all, he is a giving man….

Today, is Jeff’s special day and I would like to dedicate this post to him. Happy Birthday dude! Wishing you all the best in your life and career and many, many more birthdays to come. Have a great celebration…

Wake me up, before you go go

So it will be a while before I take to the skies again.

I will be joining the maddening masses during the morning crush on the bus, on a 45 minute journey, give or take an armpit in my face, in order to reach my final destination.

The commute I can take.

The challenge, indeed, is in getting up early enough so that I have ample time for the commute and then settle down for my lessons. I don't own an alarm clock loud enough that'll wake me and the neighbours 2 floors up and down (seriously, I've heard those ones before!) . All I have is my trusty k810i, with snooze function.

Have to, nay, GOT TO resist hitting that snooze button.

On the brighter note, I should be able to make it to the many ~~binge-drinking sessions~~ outings on in the evenings with my ~~猪朋狗友~~ friends, which will eventually translate into late nights.

Which brings me back to the problem of waking up early enough.

And the need for that loud alarm clock.

Being an Arsenal fan invariably means buying the home and away jersey every season. I know of a local fan who even buys the matching socks!

I've always resisted from printing players' names/numbers on the back of the jersey. Not only does it add to the already pricey garment, I find that my allegiance is to the Club, and not a player.

Sure, I will always have something to say about one player or another. However, the contracts they sign are as worthless as paper towels as soon as they are suckered into a huger payout somewhere else.

Which is why I am not over the moon with Adebayor's "commitment" to the Club with his newly-signed long term contract. The guy who got himself in the news for all the wrong reasons during the off-season. The guy who can't figure out how to beat the offside trap. The guy who can't control the ball effectively. The guy who fancies himself to be the next Henry of Arseanal ( and tries to emulates his moves, but FAILS!). The guy who lets his agent runs roughshod over the Club that gave him a chance.

I'd much rather take a closer look at RvP's return to fitness, look forward to Eduardo's rebirth, Bendtner's partnership up front with any other striker, the fringe players that Arsene's gonna put on the field ...

It's finally here, the best sporting event on TV.

No. Not the Olympics, but the English Premier League!!

Regular service will carry on from here on. Weekends will be spent following my Arsenal, topics with the boys (and some girls) will revolve around the play of the week, Arsenal fan sites like Arseblog, A Cultured Left Foot, and our local Siren will be refreshed countless times.

Obviously, the season will focus on Arsene's non-spending during the summer break. His stubborness not to spend on big names, whether its due to finances or not, has given many a young faces a place in the first XI that are most would not dare to dream of in other big European clubs.

To recap, I didn't start following Arsenal because of the trophies it has picked up in its long history. I am a visual person. And when I first saw TH14 bring a ball, seemingly attached to his feet, all the way from his own half to the other, and calmly slot in a goal, I was hooked.

I was to find out, 3 years on, that the beauty of Arsenal's football has a lot to do with one person's philosophy, his altruistic vision, and knack for spotting unknown, unproven talent when they are young (and spitting them out when they are past their prime!) .

I have visited the hallowed grounds, spent a small fortune watching their matches, and even swallowed my pride to sit in the away section on ce. Memorabilia of the Club is slowly filling up one of my room in my flat.

Having a local fan club helps to fuel my allegiance to the Club. The fact that we can use it to do some good work for the community is a nice touch too. Match days at The Liz is an attack in all one's senses. The singing, the crowd, the food and drinks.

One big happy Arsenal family.

There are more passionate, hardcore fans out there, but I'll do it in my own "mild-tempered" ways.

Come on Arsenal!!

'Ol Faithful

Just back from a 7hr overnight flight, and I come home to a washing machine with a clogged drain hose.

This machine has served me well for the past 5 years or so. Sure the control knob has fallen off, and yeah, I use a flat-head screwdriver to open the front when I load in my laundry. Overall though, it has done its job of making sure I have clean underwear to wear to work everyday.

I had initially wanted to get a brand new one, but then balked at the prices when I perused some at the home appliances department. They cost upwards of $800!!

After googling around for a self fix-it, I came upon this site that pretty much teaches one how to DIY repair just about any household appliance in the home.

I chickened out halfway when I heard strange noises coming from the launder monster.

So I called in the repair guys to patch up the old faithful. It took 2 visits ( the 1st was due to faulty wiring) and some earnest work from the dudes. I am happy to report that it will continue to serve me for another 2-3 years, perhaps. By then it may have to retire, missing knob, dropped off door handle and all.

Oh and what caused the clog??

I've spent the better part of a week recharging my batteries.

No blogging. Little TV. Some discovering. Much to catch up.

Some people come out of it raring to go. I must say I am still crawling out of bed slowly, even if I don't start work till National Day.

Much moolah have been spent. My latest single biggest purchase have been my 42" Plasma TV. It is a sight to behold, and even though the speakers are there for show, they look great together.

CSI never looked so good...

观音庙 at 四马路 is also somewhere I had never been. I stood in awe of the diety drenched in gold inside. I watched curiously as followers prayed intently and shook the bamboo sticks that may give them a glimpse of their future. I heard a story of how a monk transformed himself to look tubby (but jolly) as his previous handsome self attracted the wrong kind of attention.

Mustaffa at Little India is really a treasure trove of all things I liked as a young boy. If one does not mind the crowds at night, you could really browse through a whole catergory of sweets and chocolates that you used to pester your parents for.

As well as old friends, some more are getting in touch with me soon as they found out about my move up in my job. I myself am getting in touch with my seniors, asking for guidance. In the service line there's always more than one way to deal with a thorny issue. Hopefully I can manage most of them when I put on my new tie.

The next 4 months looks like it will be a jolt to my senses. Hopefully it won't be too jarring and I can report on happier, albeit inane stuff.

Now then, where can I buy a dozen pieces of office attire for my training without hurting my pocket.

Gonna head out to Batam Cable Ski for the weekend to celebrate Shai's birthday.

I will be taking the "go-there-just-to-lim-jiu" package. Which means whilst the rest are doing stunts on their wakeboards, yours truly will be kicking up his heels with a large cup of whiskey in his hand.

Not that I haven't tried my hand at it, the wakeboarding that is. Just that I always get slammed into the water when the cable starts to yank me off the platform. After my 4th try, I was bleeding from the nose. Thus ends my dalliance with an extreme sport.

It's safer on land, I gathered. Whiskey in hand, preferably.

Shai, however, takes to it like a fish in water. Now this guy not only likes it, he's got the skills to prove it.

I remember the first time I met this dude. There was something different about him, I couldn't place my finger on it at first.

Then it hit me, his hair was straightened. Rebonded. Yeah that's what they call it.

He even tried to convince me to do it. I looked back at him in disbelief and mouthed "WTF?!"

A Gooner supporter too, it was not that difficult to get friendly with him after a while. Always dressed in his best, even on casual days, it would be safe to call him a fashionable guy. On my trips overseas it is not unusual for me to help him look out for his favourite tees and/or footwear. Sibei hiao...

Always doing his best, I have had him help me out on my community projects in Arsenal Singapore on different occasions. He's done so well that the committee is asking him on board to do more for the Club. I am sure he will be able to excel in his new position.

There's no one better to rock out at Wala Wala than with this guy. He knows most of the rock classics there is, and then some. People around us are mostly amused when we start jumping up and down rocking it out with The UnXpected. He cheekily mimics those around us, who prefer to sit still and nod politely along while the band is belting their hearts out on stage, by cupping his hands under his chin.

I get a good laugh from that, but I tell ya Shai, someday you are gonna get into trouble with that.

Almost everyone I know are into some form of social networking online.

For me, it all started from some emails that I sent time to time from my yahoo email account to a group of friends. I felt that since meeting up with most of them at different times will prove to be difficult (but not impossible), a nice sincere email would do to keep them posted on ahtiong-land.

Then I discovered blogging. It was a great tool for me to just write out as and when I like, without having to email it to a significant number of people. Still, my comments to my blog are not that high, which I can live with. This is not some form of popularity contest. My friends, those with some time on their hands, do read my blog. It's just that they prefer to keep some thoughts about the post to themselves, or are too shy to share it with others. They do tell me when I meet them in person though.

Another form of networking I signed up with was Friendster. I remember how colleagues around me started ~~showing off~~ telling me the huge numbers of "friends" they have on that platform. I signed up, added a few photos here and there, sent some friends request, and left it ~~rotting~~ on it's own out there in cyber wilderness. Multiply is suffering the same fate, though I feed my blog entries over there now.

Then came Facebook. Till today people are surprised that I am not already on it. They send me invites; people see my photo in someone else's profile; the conversation swings over to "are you facebook-ing?", etc. I have the view that it is a more advanced version of Friendster, which only got it's break to come up with so many 3rd party apps and advertisers because it gave in to the big money.

And no, I do not own a Facebook account.

Twitter was another application that I ignored for a bit. It's like mini-blogging, touted by a few high profile bloggers in Sg land when it came about. I signed up, then bochup it for a while, made some new friends, added them in, and added the widget at the top of my blog.

The nice people at CBB are quite the social animals. Other then a healthy forum, with chat function (great for mudane days in the office) , many already have a blogging platform in one format or another. These people do not just hide behind the screen online, many meet up regularly to continue the conversation/discussion/bullshite that started online. A good number of them organizes "deathmatches", though I've yet to puke my guts out the few times I met some of them. Perhaps I have just not met the 掌门人 yet. Maybe then I could become one with the longkang...

Many of them have made the switch to Plurk , the next-gen social networking tool, from Twitter. Again, a few are asking me to hop on board. Till now, like Facebook, I have decided to stave off the temptation to jump on that internet bandwagon. They still do some twittering, or have some sort of app to feed their Plurks over to Twitter. So other than not being to cued into their cliques, I'm good with receiving random updates here and there.

Other than all of the above, nothing beats having some fantastic crabs at Sin Hoi San, eh Dude?

最近公司分了花红。

见到银行户口忽然那么多个数字，心里有点忐忑不安。刚刚写过未来的经济将不太乐关，但心里却一直想要买东买西。

尤其是一架新的宽平电视机，简直是看到眼花缭乱！本来只想买一架小小37寸无牌的，但一出门就只看到40到42寸的名牌款型。原本只想花不到一千元，但现在可能需要至少两千大元了！

好朋友说我以前买东西非常冲动，看到就买。现在，想了几个月都还没决下心。

反而快快去提款机把钱调去秘密户口。

嘿，可能人老了吧。。。

What if one sets out to right a wrong, but doesn't get a 2nd chance to do it?

I was tasked to come up with a jersey for my team's dragon boat race recently.

Admittedly I did not do a good job at it. Firstly, 2 people who were supposed to work with me on the design was a no-show throughout. Then I didn't know that I could have outsourced the designing/graphics to a 3rd party and charge the club for it.

The jersey I came up with was bought in a retail store in London. It was white cotton. I designed the very basic graphic by myself.The printer did a bad job.

I am guilty on all charges.

So I emailed the Club, determined to come up with something better, at my own expense. Mind you this is not a small amount.

Then, probably over a jug of beer, this chap comes up and says he can do a better job at it. 2 persons, albeit the 2 most important persons in the committee, decided that it would be best to ask members to pay for another jersey (for one last event of the calendar year) than to do a redo of a jersey that would last the whole year instead, at no more extra cost to them!!

Plus they asking him to design the new Official Club polo tee too!!

I remember objecting strongly when they first mooted the idea of using a branded polo from A&F and stick a Club patch at the back just under the collar (WTF??) . I went and bought an Old Navy polo instead and stuck the patch where it rightly belongs; on the left hand pocket.

So now they want a 2nd Official polo. Or is it a new one for every year??

So in one fell swoop, with my only recourse denied to me, I can no longer hold my head up when I go for training. In fact, if not for the fact that there are always not enough rowers for the races, I doubt I'd still be involved at all.

Screw them. It's "Me" time from now on.

Halfway through 2008.

Good time for a review of half the year gone so far, one would think.

Started the year telling myself to be, well, myself. It's not easy though, not letting what others think/say/feel bother me. Many times I feel I have to be apologizing for things that are beyond my control, knowing that any reasons I come up with would just sound like lame excuses.

Like tiny darts aimed at my back, it is starting to hurt a little. I feel I have to be proving myself to others, just to get this itch off my back. Then again if I did that, it'll just land me back at square one, wouldn't it?

So can I bear the pain and forge on ahead?

Check back on me later this year then.

Till then, it's "ME" time!!

If there's a number everyone is watching these days, it's the price of oil. Already, Saudi Arabia is planning to increase output to cope with demand. Still, the experts say that may not be enough unless the US Dollar bounces back up.

And even then, the huge demand for resources from countries such as China and India will keep prices high in the foreseeable future.

We are getting consumed by consumption.

I remember seeing the crisis in Ethiopia on BBC recently, whilst having my lunch. I lost my appetite after seeing the stick thin children being turned away by the volunteer medical personnel, because they were not "skinny" enough.

Food prices have shot up that even the humanitarian agencies are not able to afford to feed everyone there, only able to save those that are critical and could die of they do not get some food into them there and then.

Here, we are bombarded by page after page of ads that asks us to spend, spend, spend. It's most probably to keep the consumer spending their dough, so that the economy can keep going.

The smart people are scrimping and saving whenever, wherever they can; driving less, cooking at home more, watching the Euro '08 through "non-traditional" sources...

Some are taken in by the "cheap/clearance sales" that's taking up most of the mass media ad spaces. Spend, and you save now!

How soon before they raise fuel, food, services, etc prices up again, to catch up with your "savings" during the "sales"?

We live in a city where we are accustomed to comfort. How many of us will change our habits for the new, less optimistic economic environment?

Better question, how soon will it impact the people in their high towers before they make a policy that will benefit the people that "voted" them in?

I must admit, I am not a good multi-tasker.

Give me one task to complete, and I can dive right in.

Give me 2, and I get distracted.

Anything more than that, I start pressing the panic buttons. This is, in many cases, due to my innate talent at procrastinating too.

I have to settle 3 projects within the next month. So far I have only taken token steps at 2 of them, and not even got off the block with one. The last one happens to be the most important to my professional career. The 2 former ones, people are depending on me to deliver the goods.

Perhaps I have bitten off more than I can chew this time.

So I asked Shai and Kevin, the dynamic duo at Wala these days, to watch IronMan at Cathay Cineleisure. According to some people, it's not enough to call it Orchard Cathay, will get it confused with the one at Plaza Singapura...

I must admit that I never was a comic follower, my younger days did not allow me the luxury of it. Seeing them adapted for the big screen is always a kick, as it just takes a few clicks to find out about the characters, whether you know them or not.

So IronMan the movie was good. The hero, John Stark, doesn't start out as a hero at all, and it's kinda witty too. Jon Favreau (the chauffeur named Happy, in the movie) directs this movie adaptation, so there were many quick one-liners and some physical comedy. Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel Comics, makes his usual cameo, this time as Hugh Hefner (owner of Playboy Magazine) in the red carpet scene.

Won't spoil the rest of the movie for others, but do stay till the end credits finish. There is an extra scene after the credits. Really, even if the cinema hall empties out, and the cleaners are sweeping the popcorn from under your feet, STAY SEATED.

And please, leave your friends who tend to ask questions aloud during the movie at home.

Tonight, my Arsenal plays Liverpool in the 2nd leg of their Champions League encounter. This, the last part of a trilogy of matches between 2 teams that play exciting football.

I finally get to stay put in Singapore this time to be able to head to the Liz Pub and join some hardcore supporters at 0245hr Wed morning, for a nail biting match, from a Gooner's point of view.

Usually, the local (and some foreign) Gooners head to one of a few sites to psyche themselves up for the match. There's Arsenal.com, Arseblog, Arsenal Singapore forum, and SgGooner.

In fact, most head to SgGooner's ~~shite~~ site first and, after reading his post for the day, decides that is all they need to read about The Arsenal. Such is his popularity that his site has garnered ~~10119~~ ~~10141~~ 10150 hits, and still counting... Thorough, well written, with many photos to go along, it has been said that he takes up to a good 2-3 hours to do one post on his blog. Yes, even if the match ends at 5am, he still does a fine job of giving his followers a good read.

Always injecting some humour in his post, he even includes funny Sunday clips for readers to fight off the coming Monday blues.

Of course, the ups and downs of SgGooner is also reflected as he writes, therefore striking an emotional chord with his fans.

Many, me included, have been asked to guest blog for him on occasions. I suspect that it was borne out of laziness when he asked fellow Gooners first, then later, pretty much anyone else, to write an entry for him. It quickly became a badge of honour, for those asked to guest blog. He even managed to get the dude from Arseblog to pen a few lines even!

On match days, he's usually the one leading the cheers with the loudest voice, ordering the beers, cursing when the team is not up to par, and on one occasion, flinging his beer across the room when Arsenal gets that crucial result. If you see a flash go off, it's probably him getting someone to pose as the guest scorer in his post-match entry.

It's not all Arsenal with this fella though. Bits of his family life is unvealed in some post; his Man U loving brother, his most-times-neutral-football-fan father, his beautiful mum, his favourite niece Clarah, and his one true love, Cheryl. Oh, and the pet dog.

His work has taken him from the CDC, to managing events with eye candy aplenty, to dealing with some Cat-ty people at a local paper now. He still manages to co-run the Arsenal Singapore Supporters Club, along with an excellent committee, well enough to get the club enough exposure in the media, and to spread Arsenal's good name in Singapore. His charismatic nature makes him the de-facto MC during events held at The Liz Pub.

Outside of that, he's great guy to be with, especially with a bottle of whiskey around. Always wearing a smile, he can click with total strangers at a pub almost instantly. In fact that was how I got to know him, watching the Champions League match between Arsenal and Villareal last season at his place, with only an email invite to go by... Such is his magnetism that you can't help but want him at every get together that there is.

I wrote that he played a joke on April Fools' Day, about closing his blog. It seems it was not a joke after all, as he penned his last entry on 06 April 2008. Immediately, the comment box is flooded with his most faithful readers, some of which whom has never dropped a note (finally!) came on to wish him well. Though sad to read it, most respected his decision and wishes him well. There are a small number of protesters though, but mostly in good humour.

There may not be another blog that Singapore Gooners will go to for their daily digest of The Arsenal, with a local flavour. Even if they do find one, it will always be compared to SgGooner's, and I doubt it will have that "A" (for the Arsenal) factor that many have come to like about this tall, balding guy with the big voice.
